中文裡常有雙關語，英文也不例外，這種文字遊戲在英文中稱為「pun」。例如「grave」這個字有兩個意思：一是「嚴肅的」（形容詞），二是「墳墓」（名詞）。所以第一句話「He is not a grave man until he is a grave man.」其實是在說：他可不是個嚴肅的人，除非躺進墳墓裡，才會真正嚴肅起來。再像第二句「They pray for you today and prey on you tomorrow.」，其中的「pray」（祈禱）和「prey」（捕食）發音相同、字形相近，整句話便暗指：他們今天為你祈禱，明天可能就來陷害你。這些都是典型的pun。

①He drove his expensive car into a tree and found out how the Mercedes bends.

他超速駕駛昂貴的車子，結果撞上了樹，這才親眼見識到他的賓士（Mercedes）是怎麼「彎掉」的。這句話的幽默在於故意將賓士車原名「Mercedes Benz」中的「Benz」諧音改為「bends」（彎曲），形成雙關。

②Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana.

乍看之下，彷彿是說「光陰似箭，水果像香蕉一樣飛走」。但後半句的真正意思是「果蠅喜歡香蕉」，也就是將「fruit flies」（果蠅）視為主詞，而「like」作動詞「喜歡」解，整句實為「Fruit flies like a banana.」。

③A bicycle can’t stand on its own because it is two-tyred.

這句話表面是說「腳踏車自己站不穩，因為它只有兩個輪胎（two-tyred）」。但「two-tyred」與「too tired」（太累）發音相同，所以另一層意思是：這輛腳踏車被騎得太久，已經累到站不住了。
