Duanwu Festival (端午節) is a traditional Chinese festival observed on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. It is sometimes called the Double Fifth. The festival is also celebrated in various forms across other East Asian cultures. In Western countries, it is widely recognized as the Dragon Boat Festival.

While the exact origins of Duanwu are not entirely clear, one prevailing legend connects it to the poet Qu Yuan (c. 340 BC–278 BC) of the Warring States period. Distraught by the corruption of his state, Chu, he drowned himself in the Miluo River. Local people, who admired his virtue, raced out in boats to retrieve his body and threw rice into the water to prevent fish from consuming it.

This act is said to be the origin of dragon boat racing and the custom of eating zongzi. During the early Republican era in China, the day was even commemorated as “Poets’ Day” in honor of Qu Yuan’s literary legacy.
